Feeding time is my favorite time of day. I wait until late evening to feed, once the heat of the day has passed. (I don't like them eating in the hottest part of the day.) Everyday I go through my feeding routine: I get their grain and feed them (part goat pellet and part alfalfa pellet), and while they're eating I check their condition. It is the easiest time to check them all, because even Sandy, who is the most skittish, is standing still close enough for me to get a good look at her. I pet the ones that will let me, which is all of them but Brownie and Sandy. Then I fill their baking soda and minerals back up and refill their water. I also feed them hay, and of course feed Mellow her food at the same time. Then I just stand or sit and watch them. It is so relaxing and also so much fun to watch goats go about their business. There is really no way to accurately describe goat behavior, you just have to watch them. And once you do watch them, you will certainly fall in love with these adorable little creatures we call goats. There is nothing quite so sweet as having a skittish goat (Brownie) take grain from your hand for the first time, or a sweet little doe you haven't had very long (Ariel) rear up on you to ask "where's my food?", or even the friendliest goat of the bunch (Rumor) come up for a head scratch. I simply can't imagine a life without goats!
